Winter Coughs and Colds

Keep Those Coughs and Colds Under Control

The winter months bring along with it cool and exhilarating weather but common coughs and colds come in its wake too. A large number of people tend to develop coughs and colds in the winter months. However as long as you are healthy and fit, it's not really something you should be unduly worried about. In most cases, coughs and colds will take their own course, no matter what you medication you decide to take. These can generally be treated with over-the-counter medicines. Both these afflictions are caused by viruses and can pass from one person to the other very easily.
Keeping the Symptoms under Control
Whenever a person who is suffering from a cough or a cold, sneezes, tiny droplets of saliva get thrown into the air. The viruses spread via this infected saliva. If you are suffering from a cough or a cold, carry tissues with you and use them every time you sneeze or cough. There are some steps you can take to reduce the effects of coughs and colds:
•Keep yourself warm with more layers of clothing. Take a certain amount of acetaminophen/ibuprofen. It will ease the aches and pains that accompany coughs and colds.
•Ensure that you maintain a steady flow of fluid intake. Stick to fresh fruit juices and water.
•Reduce your intake of caffeinated beverages like cola, coffee and tea. There are numerous over-the-counter medicines available at the pharmacy.
•Do not consume excessive amounts of any medication.
•Your immune system helps you fight cough and cold viruses and boosting it goes a long way in recovering faster. Increase your intake of fruit, whole grain foods and fruit. They contain large amounts of minerals and vitamins.
•Do not smoke when you have a cough or cold. This hinders your immune system from working at optimum levels.
When do you need to Visit a Doctor?
In most cases, you will not need to visit a doctor for treatment. Colds and coughs tend to fade out and disappear within 7-10 days. However, if it lasts for more than 3 weeks and you suffer from shortness of breath, it is best to see a doctor as soon as possible. If you already suffer from any other chest condition or feel any chest pains, do not delay in seeing your physician.
Since your body's immune system is fighting against the infection, your body temperature might rise. Keep it under control with an acetaminophen formulation. However, if the fever shoots up too high or refuses to abate despite the medication, go to a doctor for treatment

What is dehydration?

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more water than is taken in. It is often accompanied by disturbances in the body’s mineral salt or electrolyte balance – especially disturbances in the concentrations of sodium and potassium.

How is dehydration caused?

Mild dehydration is common and usually caused by not drinking enough fluids throughout the day. In children, diarrhoea is a common cause.
Fluids are continuously lost through normal body functions such as sweating, breathing and urinating. Common causes of dehydration include gastrointestinal water loss caused by diarrhoea and vomiting, excessive urination, excessive water loss through the skin (sweating) and lungs (breathing) due to heat and/or humidity, physical activity and fever or burns.

Diarrhoea

One of the most common reasons a person loses excess water is an infection that causes diarrhoea. Diarrhoea may be caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites. A significant amount of water can be lost with each bowel movement – up to 1 litre per hour in extreme cases. Worldwide, more than four million children die each year because of dehydration from diarrhoea.

Vomiting

The rapid loss of water that occurs with severe and sustained vomiting makes dehydration more likely to occur, as it is difficult to restore hydration status by drinking. The risk of dehydration due to vomiting is higher in infants and children, in the elderly, in people with eating disorders (e.g. bulimia) and anyone taking medications that can cause vomiting.

Excessive urination

There are certain medications that increase urination beyond normal levels (e.g. diuretics), and there are conditions that affect kidney function, leading to the loss of body water through urine. Conditions that may affect urine production include diabetes and kidney cancer. Diabetes is characterised by elevated blood sugar levels causing sugar to spill into the urine and excessive urination which can lead to significant dehydration.

Sweating

Sweating or perspiration is the mechanism used by the body to cool itself in conditions of heat, humidity and physical activity. Humidity can play a greater role in dehydration than heat, because the sweat drips from the body rather than evaporating, and thus does not cause a loss of heat from the body. However, high rates of sweating can also occur during sports or other vigorous physical activity in cool and dry conditions, contributing to the risk of dehydration. Heavy clothing limits sweat evaporation meaning that body heat is not dissipated causing the body to lose even more water as it attempts to lose more heat.

Fever or burns

These conditions, including sunburn, increase body temperature, requiring more fluid for proper body functioning. Fever is present due to an infection and the body uses a significant amount of water in the form of sweat to cool itself. Burn victims become dehydrated because water seeps into the damaged skin and is lost by evaporation.

Consequences

Mild dehydration can cause symptoms such as thirst, headache, weakness, dizziness and fatigue and generally makes people feel tired and lethargic. Symptoms of moderate dehydration may include dry mouth, little or no urine, sluggishness, a rapid heartbeat and lack of skin elasticity. Severe dehydration is a life-threatening medical emergency, and is characterized by extreme thirst, no urine, rapid breathing, altered mental state and cold, clammy skin.

Chronic dehydration can increase the risk of infection, particularly of the urinary tract. The kidneys and other major organs that receive a decreased blood flow may begin to fail. Kidney failure is a common occurrence, although it is reversible if it is due to dehydration and is treated early. Decreased blood supply to the brain may cause confusion, impairing both cognitive function and coordination.

5 Tips For Dressing to Stay Warm and Dry in the Snow

1. Dress in layers. It's important to understand that dressing for the snow is a process. It's not just a matter of buying a pair of ski pants and a ski jacket, and you're good to go. You need to consider the under layers that you use as much as the outer layers. Get good quality thermal underlayers and a great synthetic fleece to go under that ski jacket and pants, and you'll be set to be out on the snow on the coldest of days. Ignore the underlayers and you may not.
2. Avoid natural fibers, especially next to your skin. There are some wonderful fibers like cotton and wool, and they have been in use in cold and wet climates for many years. This is because they were the best available years ago. But now there are much better synthetic fabrics available, which do a better job of keeping you both warm and dry.
Cotton and wool attract damp. Cotton next to your skin will absorb your sweat and so leave you feeling chilled and damp. A high quality synthetic fabric is designed to wick moisture away from your skin and encourage the moisture to travel to the next layer. This is what is known as "breathing". The fabric allows the moisture generated by sweat and exercise to pass through the fabric, and the fabric doesn't trap the moisture and become damp. A natural fabric such as cotton doesn't do this satisfactorily, and will get damp over time. Whilst cotton and wool will retain heat well in some circumstances, such as when you are continuing moving, they make you cold and damp very quickly when you stop and your body cools, and so should be avoided.
3. Use high quality synthetic fabrics. There are some excellent high quality synthetic fabrics available, Polarfleece and Gore Tex are 2 that you have probably heard about already, primarily because they are very good. High quality fabrics are of course more expensive. However if you factor in the cost of the higher quality ski wear over the life of the ski clothing you'll find that the extra cost is not so much.
That's because the high quality fabrics will usually last much longer than lower quality copies, so although you are paying more initially you are buying skiwear that will outlive the cheaper ski clothing, and will pay for itself in the long run. There are many fabrics that are copies of the high quality fabrics, but don't perform as well or last as long. A good quality ski jacket, for example, should have you skiing and comfortable when you may well be back in the apartment if you were wearing a poor quality jacket.
4. Buy a known brand name. There are some very well known brand names in the ski clothing industry. Names that are well known amongst skiers for the quality of their ski gear, and with a solid reputation to protect. Names such as North Face and Patagonia. And there is a stack of ski clothing with brand names that you would never have heard of, usually cheaper. It can be a false economy to buy a cheap unknown brand. Stick to those that are known to produce high quality long lasting ski clothing.
5. Don't forget the accessories. It wouldn't be the first time that someone had all the best ski clothing, but cheap gloves, and ended up back in the apartment because their hands were frozen. Or bought poor goggles, and couldn't ski because they fogged up all the time. Don't spend all your money on your ski clothing and skimp on the accessories. Good quality gloves and goggles are important.

Flu Prevention and Treatment With Home Remedies

Cold or flu?
Both the common cold and the flu cause sore throat, cough and runny nose. Although the flu usually manifests more severe symptoms, the only way to distinguish a cold from a serious flu is for the doctor to send throat and nose samples to the lab.
How to prevent the flu
Prepare your resistance to infections before the cold season. Even if you get the flu, there are chances that you develop a milder form.
  • Eat healthy
  • Do daily aerobic exercises.
  • Take multivitamin and mineral supplements every day (including beta-carotene, vitamin C and E, flavonoids, selenium and zinc).
  • Avoid fatigue and stress.
  • Avoid crowds in the flu season.
  • Drink echinacea tea, take tincture or tablets 2 or 3 times a week during winter. Take one dose every day, if you come in contact with someone who already got the flu.
  • Eat fresh garlic or take a garlic tablet every day.
  • Preventively, once every three weeks during winter take a homeopathic remedy.
Beware of infections
At the first sign of the flu, gargle in the morning and evening half a glass of warm water with 2 drops of tea tree and geranium oil.
How to treat the flu
Treat the flu seriously, because it can lead to severe complications. Stay home so you won't spread the infection and don't leave the bed, because you need all the strength to face the viruses. Pay attention to medicine which is sold without prescription: they can mask some unpleasant symptoms, making you think you are healthy when in reality, you still haven't healed yet. Stay at home at least one day after the temperature has returned to normal.
Diet
Drink plenty of fluids without alcohol and caffeine, like water, fruit juices, rye water and medicinal teas (which you'll see in the phytotherapy part). Blackcurrant tea can ease a sore throat and provide an additional amount of vitamin C, which fights the infection.
