How to Keep Hair Healthy During Winter

Winter Hair Care
As the seasons change you many notice the condition of your hair change as well. Between the low temperatures, arctic winds, the sun and the dry heat indoors your hair can become very dry. But that doesn't mean you have to settle with a season full of bad hair days. Follow these preventative and protective measures and your hair should stand up to the coldest elements.

Indoor Heating
Heat produced from an indoor heating system is very dry and can dry out your hair. Using a humidifier to increase moisture in the air will assist the humectants with keeping your hair hydrated.
Reduce chemical treatments
This beauty process already damages hair regardless of the season. Instead of highlighting hair look into getting low lights or coloring your hair with ammonia or peroxide free treatments.

Conditioning
Conditioning your hair will keep it healthy and moisturized. Select a conditioner that contains soy protein and panthenol, these ingredients attract and hold moisture in the hair. Also be sure to choose the correct conditioner for your hair type. You should deep condition at least once a week in the winter.
For thick or curly hair, deep condition with a thick, rich moisturizing conditioner. With these hair types, the hair's natural oils tend to sit at the roots leaving the rest of the hair dry. So you may not have to apply conditioner at the scalp. In this instance you can apply the product about 2 inches away from the root.
For thin, fine hair use a regular conditioner after shampooing and follow up with a light leave in conditioner that won't weigh down your hair.
Additionally, remember to increase moisture in the areas of your hair that tend to dry out the most often, like the older hair at the ends.

Static electricity
Well conditioned hair usually doesn't have static electricity. Also brushing your hair with a natural boar bristle brush with a wooden handle can further reduce static.

Reduce exposure to heat
Another way to retain moisture is by reducing your hair's exposure to heating tools. Stopping all together might be better but I'm not sure if we can all do that. When you're blow drying your hair use a dryer that has tourmaline and stop once your hair is dry. Tourmaline breaks down water molecules making the drying process faster and easier. Use the lower heating setting on all heating tools and after a curling iron has been on your hair for 15-20 seconds, it should be curled.

1. Mold and mildew. Left unchecked, water damage can contribute to the growth of mold and mildew in your home. This can lead to breathing and other health problems for you and your family, especially for people with allergies, or asthma and other respiratory diseases. Mold can begin growing in as little as 48 hours after water damage has occurred. To avoid a mold problem, hire a commercial cleaning service to clean up your home as soon as possible after you experience water damage.
2. Structural problems. Severe water damage can undermine your home's structural stability. Depending on the extent of the damage and where it occurred, it may cause problems with your roof, floors, walls, or even the home's foundation. To avoid permanent damage to a home's structure, it is important to remove all water as quickly as possible. If you're concerned about a building's stability because of water damage, don't enter it; instead call a building inspector, who can let you know if it's safe to be in the home.
3. Electrical problems. Water can easily damage your home's wiring. In worst-case scenarios, this can contribute to fires or cause electrocutions. In other cases, you may need to replace electrical appliances or have your home's wiring professionally repaired. Always call a licensed electrician to deal with any electrical problems in your home after water damage. Also, make sure that you know how to shut off all the electricity to your home, so that you can prevent injuries and accidents if your home is flooded.
4. Bacteria, germs, and parasites. Depending on the source of the water in your home, it could harbor bacteria, germs, and parasites. If your home has been flooded with waste material (perhaps from a sewage backup); you will definitely need to hire a commercial cleaning service to deal with the problem. Failing to clean up properly after this kind of damage could make your family sick with illnesses like hepatitis, or diminish the value of your property because of a lingering noxious smell.
5. Chemicals. Depending on the source of the water in your home, it might be contaminated with hazardous chemicals. This may be the case if the water came from outside the home, or if household chemicals intermingled with the floodwaters. In any case, it's always best to hire a home cleaning expert to deal with situations where there is a possible chemical contamination. They'll know how to take proper precautionary measures when cleaning and make sure your home is safe for you and your family.

Winter Coughs and Colds

Keep Those Coughs and Colds Under Control

The winter months bring along with it cool and exhilarating weather but common coughs and colds come in its wake too. A large number of people tend to develop coughs and colds in the winter months. However as long as you are healthy and fit, it's not really something you should be unduly worried about. In most cases, coughs and colds will take their own course, no matter what you medication you decide to take. These can generally be treated with over-the-counter medicines. Both these afflictions are caused by viruses and can pass from one person to the other very easily.
Keeping the Symptoms under Control
Whenever a person who is suffering from a cough or a cold, sneezes, tiny droplets of saliva get thrown into the air. The viruses spread via this infected saliva. If you are suffering from a cough or a cold, carry tissues with you and use them every time you sneeze or cough. There are some steps you can take to reduce the effects of coughs and colds:
•Keep yourself warm with more layers of clothing. Take a certain amount of acetaminophen/ibuprofen. It will ease the aches and pains that accompany coughs and colds.
•Ensure that you maintain a steady flow of fluid intake. Stick to fresh fruit juices and water.
•Reduce your intake of caffeinated beverages like cola, coffee and tea. There are numerous over-the-counter medicines available at the pharmacy.
•Do not consume excessive amounts of any medication.
•Your immune system helps you fight cough and cold viruses and boosting it goes a long way in recovering faster. Increase your intake of fruit, whole grain foods and fruit. They contain large amounts of minerals and vitamins.
•Do not smoke when you have a cough or cold. This hinders your immune system from working at optimum levels.
When do you need to Visit a Doctor?
In most cases, you will not need to visit a doctor for treatment. Colds and coughs tend to fade out and disappear within 7-10 days. However, if it lasts for more than 3 weeks and you suffer from shortness of breath, it is best to see a doctor as soon as possible. If you already suffer from any other chest condition or feel any chest pains, do not delay in seeing your physician.
Since your body's immune system is fighting against the infection, your body temperature might rise. Keep it under control with an acetaminophen formulation. However, if the fever shoots up too high or refuses to abate despite the medication, go to a doctor for treatment
